First, our homes are built in a controlled environment where we can monitor material use and reduce waste, while also making sure our processes and workspaces are as efficient as possible. Clayton has 57 home building facilities and Clayton Supply® facilities that are ISO® 14001:2015 certified. ISO 14001 is an international set of standards that specifies requirements for an effective environmental management system.
Some of the practices we use when building our homes to help make the construction process more sustainable include:
- Ordering Precut Materials: By ordering materials in the specific sizes we need, Clayton reduces more waste than if the materials were cut to size in individual facilities. Also, builders save time by reducing the number of steps it takes to build our homes.
- Sourcing Materials: Along with ordering materials in specific sizes, Clayton is also able to order many of the precut materials we use most often at scale to help save on packaging and shipping. These materials include lumber, siding and sheetrock. And thanks to our internal supply chain, we can also manufacture and source items like windows, cabinets and roof trusses.
- Recycling and Reusing: Throughout our operations, we continue to evaluate ways to optimize our use of building materials. This includes reincorporating unused material back into our production processes, where possible. We also partner with vendors and our communities to recycle materials that cannot be directly reused in production. Materials that are often recyclable in our facilities include lumber, scrap metal, cardboard, copper wire, vinyl siding, aluminum, plastic and more.
- Renewable Energy: Clayton also continues to expand our use of renewable energy. Currently, four of our home building facilities in Texas, Arizona and Tennessee have installed solar to help power their operations.
Energy-Efficient Features in Clayton Homes
In addition to the way we build our homes, the homes themselves also offer a variety of energy-efficient features. These features can help homeowners save energy and money on utilities from the day they move in, and in the years to come to help reduce the overall cost of homeownership.
In fact, Clayton eBuilt® modern manufactured homes, built to the U.S. Department of Energy's Zero Energy Ready Home™ standards, require less energy than a traditional manufactured home. They can help homeowners save up to 50% on their annual energy costs* and include features from trusted brands, like an ecobee Smart Thermostat®, quality insulation, Low-E argon gas windows and Rheem® heat pump water heater.
Partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation
Our efforts also extend to the future we build in the communities where we live and work. In 2022, Clayton announced we’re working with the Arbor Day Foundation® to further our commitment to sustainability. In partnership with the foundation, Clayton has committed to planting 4.47 million trees by 2025 through large-scale reforestation projects in strategic locations to help restore vital ecosystems. The partnership is planting the majority of these trees on either public land, private conservation easements or in forests managed by a non-governmental organization.
Through this partnership, these trees will not only replace the ones used to build our homes, but can also help filter water, improve the air quality, shelter endangered species and other local wildlife, and promote biodiversity. So far, over 4.165 million trees have been planted with support from Clayton.
Sustainability at Our Home Office
Clayton’s corporate home office is also proud to be doing our part when it comes to conserving resources. We have installed a 795-kilowatt solar panel system to meet about 20% of the office’s electricity needs. We also have recycling stations around the office for team members, and our own green team dedicated to environmental initiatives like composting, cafeteria food waste reduction, community outreach and office renovation recycling.
Clayton is also expanding its use of renewable energy in its operations with solar installations at our home office in Tennessee and home building facilities in Arizona and Texas. These systems are projected to generate 2.9 million kWh annually.
“Clayton is dedicated to improving lives and building a better tomorrow,” says Clayton CEO Kevin Clayton.
So, from more sustainable construction at our facilities and providing energy-efficient home features, to recycling at our home office and planting millions of trees, we are dedicated to an environment-friendly future for both our customers and our communities.
