A Future with Renewable Energy

How Clayton is Investing in Solar

August 27, 2024

At Clayton®, we are committed to improving lives and building a better tomorrow, not only for our communities but for our planet. From the homes we build to how we run our daily operations we strive to drive change through innovative, and more environmentally responsible practices that positively impact the communities where we live and work.

Those practices start with maintaining ISO® 14001:2015* certification at 51 of our home building and supply facilities, fully integrating hybrid pilot vehicles into our Clayton Connect® transportation fleet and modernizing our equipment with electric forklifts.

Clayton team members are core to our commitment, and their innovation helps to identify new opportunities for sustainability in our operations, like a water filtration system at Clayton Albuquerque that saves over 100 thousand gallons of water a year and an insulation damming process at Clayton Rockwell that repurposes material. Clayton knows that being wise with our resources isn’t only good for the planet – it can also support our business, helping to lower costs associated with building a home.

As part of our commitment, we continue to increase our reliance on renewable energy, installing solar power systems at our facilities across the country. These efforts not only help reduce the carbon emissions from our operations, but also enable savings in energy costs and help to reduce demand on our local power grid.

“We recognize the opportunity for solar in off-site built housing. Our operations are capable of using solar to help power the build process, which is unique in the homebuilding industry.,” said William Jenkins, Senior Director of Environment and Sustainability for Clayton Home Building Group®.

Sulphur Springs Solar

Solar Carports

Two of our facilities, Clayton Buckeye in Arizona and Clayton Sulphur Springs in Texas, have overhead solar parking canopies, which capture energy while providing shade for team members' vehicles.

Ground-Mount Solar

A ground mount solar system is a group of free-standing solar panels that are placed at the ground level and angled to get optimal exposure to the sun. This type of system is currently in place at Clayton Bean Station and Clayton Rutledge, two of our home building facilities in Tennessee.

Clayton Home Office Solar

Roof-Mount Solar

Roof mount solar systems are secured to the roof of a building, like the one featured at Clayton’s headquarters in Maryville, TN. The installation is currently the largest solar power system in the city of Alcoa, TN and will help provide 20% of the electricity used at the home office.

“We have a tremendous opportunity to Drive Change in homebuilding, and we’re excited about the impact we can have as a business, not only with the homes we build but also with how we operate,” said Jenkins. “We realize that sustainability is a huge opportunity for us.”
